Using a Journal as a Weight Loss Tool

You may be like many others when it comes to journaling. There are two kinds of people: people who consistently journal and have done so and will continue to do so and people who have started multiple journals only to lose them or forget about it all together.

The truth is if you can dedicate time to logging and tracking your healthy habits it can be a great benefit to your weight loss efforts, as well as helping you stick to them. Weight loss specialist doctors often suggest keeping a food journal to see where you are falling short when it comes to reaching your weight loss goals.

Food Log

Many studies done by medical weight loss doctors have found that individuals who keep some kind of record (whether on paper or with an app) of what they eat throughout the day have better success at losing weight. It has been found that it helps people manage their diet, control their portions and stick to healthy habits more effectively.

This is likely due to the mentality of losing weight and sticking to anything from a few lifestyle changes to taking on a healthy eating plan from a medical weight loss clinic that seems to be the greatest challenge. The mind needs to be willing because the body is able.

A food log does not necessarily mean counting calories (though this can also be helpful). Getting into the habit of recording what you have eaten forces you to truly think about what you have eaten, when and how large the portions were. Log how much water you drink per day too. You will find it easier to see food as fuel and eventually want to stick to healthier choices.

Meal Planning

You can also use your food journal to plan your meals. This will help you keep track of when you need to restock your weight loss products if you see you are running low on your breakfast shakes or healthy snack options.

Exercise Log

You can use your journal to log exercise goals and mark dates you have completed them. This will help you want to fill the log and make you less likely to skip sessions. You will see the results on paper and on the scale as you track how your healthy habits are influencing your weight loss. Try 30 day fitness challenges and track them to keep the exercise varied and your mind motivated.

Weight Loss Tracker

This can be as simple or as complex as you like. You can add photographs to help motivate you to your weight loss goals and correlate your weight loss with your food and exercise log. Be sure to add weight and measurements to this list so you have a true representation of your progress.
